Long Day

Mom went for her first chemo treatment today. Her appointment was at 11am. I started calling about 3pm....not home yet. I called several times before I left work at 5pm and still no answer. I was starting to worry. They didn't get home until after 5. It seems that they had troubles with her port and getting the proper size needle. She has to go twice a week, every other week. The first day of the week she will be there for about 3 1/2 hours and the 2 day she goes will be a short visit to remove the needle and hose. She will have some side effects, but should not loose her hair. She is also now anemic (spelling?) and her protein levels are really low. I keep trying to force her to eat and drink but it proving to be difficult. I don't know what to cook for them. I need to find things that are quick to prepare. I don't want them to eat Stouffers entrees everyday. I feel exhausted already...and we're just getting started. Any recipe advice is appreciated.

  1. sandra, chemo can leave a bad taste in their mouths, and naturally decrease their appetites because of it, sometimes its a metalic taste and some foods can make it even worse..look up some sites for foods that work with chemo patients... also think of it like a pregnant woman, whatever sounds good to her, make lots of it and if thats all she eats, at least she's eating...if she likes frozen confections, you can freeze boost, or protein drinks and they taste better, same with any juices or gatorade, they may taste better to her, and add to her hydration and electrolites...
sometimes their throats feel funny, hubby didnt like drinking, but loved anything frozen ...

hope this helps hun... you also might want to make sure that she has an advanced directive..a living will of sorts,... the hospital has the papers for you, just incase your dad is ill again, you will have the right to make decisions for her, and him...or even the right to get medical information about her... just so that you wont be left in the dark as to how she is being treated...
i know its a tough road, i really do...i went through this with my father and my hubby,... and im always saddened to know someone else has to go down this road....
